Contactless payment for public transport in Szczecin
Passengers in Szczecin pay bus and tram fares with contactless bank cards, phones and wearables. GMV delivered the card reading hardware, Switchio the certified cEMV payment application and gateway connected to Elavon.
We have completed another public transport modernization project, introducing frictionless open-loop fare collection to the city of Szczecin. Managed in coordination with the Roads and Public Transport Authority (ZDiTM), the deployment allows passengers to pay for transit fares directly with contactless bank cards, smartphones, and wearables across the entire municipal bus and tram network.
The physical infrastructure, engineered and delivered by GMV, brings rugged, unattended card-reading hardware to high-traffic transfer hubs as well as onboard the municipal transit fleet.
To power these transactions, Switchio deployed its certified cEMV payment application and gateway engine. The platform operates online in real time, securely handling tokenization and routing authorizations directly to acquiring partner Elavon in full compliance with PCI DSS standards.
In addition to opening the network to universal bank cards, the modernized kiosks maintain complete backward compatibility with the local closed-loop smart card system, the Szczecin Agglomeration Card (SKA). Commuters can continue using the terminals to check balances, top up their digital transit wallets, and purchase long-term travel passes.
This project further solidifies our strategic partnership with GMV, building on the success of our joint nationwide transit ticketing implementation in Cyprus as we continue expanding modern Automated Fare Collection (AFC) solutions across Europe.
